    Returning sci-fi shows summer watchlist

In the past, summer television barely featured new content as networks relied heavily on repeats and reality TV. However, times have changed and now, even in the hottest months, the small screen is alive with fresh content. For enthusiasts of science fiction, this transformation means that there’s a wealth of series returning this summer to capture one’s attention. Having previously explored the new sci-fi releases for the season, it’s now time to highlight the returning favorites eager to make a splash, much like the seasonal recommendations found in the Spring TV guide 2026: your essential viewing lineup.

    Returning Sci-Fi Shows Summer

The Terror, starting on May 7 on AMC/Shudder, is set for a dramatic new season titled Devil in Silver. After a seven-year hiatus, this respected anthology horror series delves into the chilling mysteries within a psychiatric hospital. A man unjustly institutionalized must face an array of supernatural and natural challenges to survive.

Good Omens returns on Amazon Prime on May 13, overcoming setbacks to present its climactic conclusion. While plans for a six-part season were initially scrapped, fans can now look forward to a 90-minute finale. Michael Sheen and David Tennant star as an unlikely angel-demon duo striving to maintain balance on Earth against the backdrop of an impending apocalypse.

Fans of animated sci-fi can rejoice as Rick & Morty ventures into its ninth season starting May 24 on Adult Swim. With ten new episodes, viewers are in for yet another whirlwind of multiverse adventures, solidifying the show’s position as a modern animation giant. This series has sustained its popularity over a decade, thanks in part to continuous creative evolutions and strategic renewals ensuring its long-term run.

    Sugar

On June 19, Sugar makes its return on Apple, continuing its journey as an acclaimed yet understated sci-fi detective series. Starring Colin Farrell, this neo-noir drama has won critical praise for its compelling narrative and atmospheric world. The second season aims to attract a larger audience to explore this richly crafted universe.

    House of the Dragon

June 21 marks the return of House of the Dragon on HBO, a Game of Thrones prequel that fleshes out tales predating the original saga. While the debut season took time to gain momentum, it found its stride by the thrilling second season. As it heads into its third season, anticipation builds for the narrative arcs poised for transformation, especially with the series already renewed for a conclusive fourth season.

With its new season launching on July 13, Silo continues to be one of Apple’s flagship sci-fi offerings. The story paints a vivid portrait of a society thriving in an immense underground structure in a post-apocalyptic world. Based on Hugh Howey’s novel series and adapted by Graham Yost, the show features an impressive ensemble cast, further establishing its firm footprint in the genre.

    Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Debuting on Paramount Plus on July 23, the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to uphold the classic charm of its esteemed predecessors. The series exemplifies the exploratory spirit characteristic of old-school Trek, building on a previously untold part of the narrative. As it gears up for a fifth and final season, the adventure continues.

    X-Men ‘97

This summer also signals the exciting return of X-Men ‘97 on Disney Plus, though the date is yet to be determined. Reviving the style and story of its original animated counterpart with contemporary twists, this series stands tall in its genre, drawing parallels with shows like Invincible. The animation quality ensures it remains exhilarating, promising a blend of nostalgia and innovation for viewers.
