New Broadway musicals 2026-27 surge with $30 million bets

New Broadway musicals 2026-27 are staging a genuine comeback after a noticeably quiet stretch last season. Notably, the upcoming lineup blends celebrated West End transfers, fresh scores from Prince and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and eye-watering $30 million budgets. Together, these signals point toward renewed confidence in commercial theater.

New Broadway Musicals 2026-27 Signal a Bold Financial Bet

ATG Entertainment sits at the center of this revival. The multinational theater landlord and producer is currently raising $15 million to bring The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to Broadway next spring, following its Olivier Award-winning London run. Meanwhile, Ari Emanuel’s live events firm Mari recently confirmed a deal to acquire ATG entirely.

Benjamin Button will first land at the Public Theater this fall, with producers Gavin Kalin and GBA also attached. This Celtic and folk-infused production will join The Heart, an electronic dance music-driven show aiming for a roughly $15 million transfer after its run at Roundabout Theatre Co.’s Laura Pels venue.

A Crowded Slate of Big-Budget Productions

Several other titles have already announced Broadway plans. These include Paddington at $31 million, Purple Rain at $29.5 million, the Dolly Parton musical Dolly at $30 million, and Galileo at $23 million. Wanted and Miranda and Eisa Davis’ The Warriors round out the list, though neither has disclosed capitalization figures in SEC filings.

If all eight productions open before the spring 2027 Tony cutoff, the season would finally match 21st-century norms. In fact, it could rival or exceed totals from 2011-12, 2012-13, 2017-18, and the shortened 2019-20 season. Additionally, this count excludes promising regional productions like The Lunchbox, Iceboy!, and Black Swan, which drew strong reviews in Berkeley, Chicago, and Boston respectively.

In contrast, the 2025-26 season saw only six new musicals debut on Broadway, the lowest count in 25 years. Consequently, this decline reinforced doubts about the art form’s financial sustainability amid rising costs and frequent closures.

Paddington Leads the Charge With Investor Confidence

Investors are clearly betting that Paddington can reverse this pessimistic trend. Thanks to glowing reviews, strong London ticket sales, and seven Olivier Awards, the financing vehicle Dramatic Paws on Broadway LP is already oversubscribed.

Sonia Friedman Productions, an ATG subsidiary, is producing Paddington. Notably, ATG also owns the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where previews begin March 30, 2027. Since 2013, private equity giant Providence Equity Partners has held majority ownership of ATG, and it has now agreed to sell to Emanuel’s Mari for a reported $6 billion.

Purple Rain backers can draw encouragement from MJ‘s trajectory. That production recouped its investment within 15 months and has remained profitable both in New York and on tour. Furthermore, MJ‘s grosses have climbed since May, boosted by renewed interest from the Michael Jackson biopic Michael.

However, context matters here. MJ was capitalized at just $22.5 million in 2022, roughly $26 million in today’s dollars. Therefore, the math behind a $30 million musical remains daunting, especially with weekly operating costs often exceeding $1 million.

Mixed Financial Outcomes Highlight the Risks

Harry Potter & the Cursed Child, capitalized at $35.5 million in 2018, offers a more encouraging precedent. This play, budgeted like a musical, has recouped its investment and delivered modest profits to date.

By contrast, Death Becomes Her tells a cautionary tale. Capitalized at $31.5 million, Universal Theatrical Group’s adaptation closed in June after 666 performances. Ultimately, it resulted in a total loss for investors, according to a financial statement filed with the Attorney General’s office.

Many theatergoers complain that Broadway tickets cost too much. Yet, for numerous shows that fail to sustain long runs, average prices simply aren’t high enough. As a result, every production—whether budgeted at $31 million or $15 million—must generate enough demand to keep audiences paying premium prices week after week.

This tiered pricing strategy is familiar territory for Emanuel, who has built tennis tournaments, art fairs, and premium sports hospitality brands. “Rich people are asking for more and more, ’cause they can get everything,” Emanuel recently told podcaster Patrick O’Shaughnessy. “Some people are going to pay $100. Some people are going to pay $300. And then some people are going to pay crazy.”

Ultimately, the fate of new Broadway musicals in 2026-27 depends on exactly that dynamic. Enough audiences must be willing to pay premium prices, consistently, to make these ambitious budgets work.
